Uau! There's a new commemorative €2 coin to celebrate 10 years of the Euro.

Citizens and residents of the European Union were invited to vote online to select the design and chose the design created by Mr G Stamatopoulos, of the Greek Central Bank.

I hope I can get one of those for me, they really look like some of your drawings, don't they?

The tale of Princess Europe (Podcast)

I decided to tell you the story of Princess Europe.

Europa was the beautiful daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor.

Zeus, the King of the Greek gods saw Europa as she was gathering flowers by the sea and immediately fell in love with her.

Full of love for Europa, Zeus transformed himself into the form of a big white bull and appeared in the sea shore where Europa was playing with her friends. The great bull walked gently over to where Europa was and knelt at her feet. The appearance and movements of the bull were so gentle that Europa spread flowers around his neck and dared to climb upon his back overcoming her natural fear of the great animal.

But suddenly, the bull rushed over the sea abducting Europa. Only then the bull revealed its true identity and took Europa to the Mediterranean island of Crete. There, Zeus cast off the shape of the white bull, and went back into his human form. Europa became the first queen of Crete and had three sons with zeus.

At last, Zeus reproduced the shape of the white bull, used to seduce Europa, in the stars. Even today we can recognize its shape in the constellation Taurus.

The name Europa was given to one of Jupiter's 16 original moons. Europa is special, because it is one of the few moons in our solar system that may have liquid water.

Era uma vez...

O Gato e o Galo

Um conto lituano

Era uma vez um gato e um galo que construíram uma casa linda
por baixo de uma árvore grande ao pé de floresta.
Depois da construção acabada, viveram os dois sossegados e felizes.

Um dia, de manhã cedo, alguém bateu à porta.
O gato levantou-se da sua cama e perguntou:

- Quem é que está a bater a esta hora?

- Eu sou a raposa, abra a porta, senhor gato.
Todo o dia estive no bosque ao pé do lago a procurar os patos,
mas não apanhei nem um...

O gato levantou a sua cauda felpuda e respondeu:

- Vai-te embora, raposa desavergonhada, deixa-nos em paz.
Tu não me enganas e não apanhas o galo.
Vai-te embora. Vai! Eu não te deixo entrar.

A raposa furiosa não se foi embora, só se escondeu atrás das árvores e ficou à espera.

O gato disse ao galo:

- Eu tenho que ir à caça, procurar comida.
E tu, galo-cantor, não abres a porta a ninguém.
A raposa ainda pode estar por perto.
E o gato foi-se embora com a sua cauda felpuda levantada.

A raposa lambeu os seus lábios e lentamente veio até à casa deles.

- Olá, galo, galinho bonito, de penas coloridas. Toda gente te
ama por causa da tua voz muito linda.
Ó galo lindo, deixa-me entrar.

- Quem é que está a bater à porta?

- Ó galo de penas coloridas, sou eu, sou eu, a galinha bonita.
Eu sei como achar minhocas no jardim.
Eu ando no jardim todo dia e à procura de bichinhos.

O galo disse assustado:

- Como é que não tens medo da raposa? Entra, entra, por favor.
Eu já vi a raposa hoje.

Mal o galo abriu a porta um pouquinho, a raposa agarrou-o
e levou-o, correndo. Ela correu com pressa
sem olhar para atrás, e o galo gritou:

- Gato, gatinho, resgata o galo-cantor!
A raposa leva-me pelas montanhas altas, pelos campos grandes,
pelos relvados verdes, pelas florestas densas.

O gato ouviu os gritos, deixou tudo e correu atrás da raposa,
apanhou-a e resgatou o seu amigo.

No outro dia o gato disse ao seu companheiro:

- Eu tenho que ir à caça, procurar comida, porque ontem
não consegui. E tu, galo-cantor, ficas em casa e não
abres a porta a ninguém.
E o gato saiu com a sua cauda felpuda levantada.

Mas a raposa desavergonhada já estava outra vez atrás
da porta da casa e começou a cantar:

- Ó galo, galinho, de penas bonitas, toda a gente te ama
pela tua voz linda. Ó galo, deixa-me entrar.

- Quem está a bater a porta?

-Ó galo de penas coloridas, sou eu, o cão teimoso.
Procuro a raposa na floresta.

- Que bom que vieste! E não tens medo de raposa.
Entra, entra, por favor, eu tenho medo de ficar sozinho em casa.

Mal o galo abriu a porta um pouquinho, a raposa agarrou-o
e levou-o, correndo. Ela correu pelo campo grande c
om muita pressa e o galo gritou:

- Gato, gatinho, está a tremer a minha crista!
A raposa está a tirar as minhas penas, ela leva-me
pelas montanhas altas, pelos campos grandes, pelos relvados
verdes, pelas florestas densas.

O gato ouviu os gritos, deixou tudo e correu atrás da raposa,
mas magoou-se no pé e não apanhou a raposa.
Andou coxeando pela floresta, apoiando-se num pau,
e viu na floresta a cova da raposa. Espreitou para dentro e
reparou que lá dentro estava a raposa com seis raposinhas
e o galo preso no canto. O gato começou a cantar baixinho:

- No meio da floresta dançam seis raposinhas bonitinhas,
e o galo, o sétimo, está preso no moinho de farinha...
As seis raposinhas bonitinhas, com os seus rabinhos,
são ainda mais bonitas. A velha raposa fez um bolo hoje.
Ó raposa querida, dá-me um pedacinho do teu bolo gostoso.

A raposa velha estava a varrer a sala e ouviu a canção:

- Quem é que está aí a cantar? O gato não respondeu,
só cantou outra vez a mesma canção. Ela ficou muito curiosa
e abriu a porta, e o gato apanhou-a e fechou-a num saco,
e voltou para junto da cova e continuou a cantar.

- No meio da floresta dançam seis raposinhas bonitinhas,
e o galo, o sétimo, está preso no moinho da farinha...

Saiu uma raposinha para ver quem está a cantar e o gato
também a apanhou. Assim continuou até apanhar todas
as raposinhas e fechar no saco. E finalmente resgatou o galo.

Agora as raposinhas estão num jardim zoológico.
Se não acreditam, peçam aos vossos pais para vos levar a ver as raposas.

Ode to Joy

Did you know that "Ode to Joy" is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, Friedrich Schiller, celebrating the brotherhood and unity of all mankind?
It is best known for its musical setting by Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony.
It was adopted as the Anthem of Europe by the Council of Europe in 1972, the European Community in 1993 and the European Union in 1985.
Here's a very very funny version of the melody!!!
